Science Alert explained that the study, published in the scientific journal “The Conversation,” involved tracking more than 2,400 elderly individuals over 15 years. The results showed that participants who adhered to healthy diets like the MIND diet (designed for brain health) or the Mediterranean diet were less likely to suffer from heart disease, stroke, depression, and dementia compared to those who consumed inflammation-causing foods, such as processed meats, refined grains, and sugary drinks. The researchers emphasized that these findings are significant because having multiple chronic diseases increases the risk of disability and early death, and also places a burden on healthcare systems. It was noted that the benefits of healthy nutrition were more apparent among women and individuals over 78 years old, suggesting that “it’s never too late” to improve dietary habits.
Among the proposed mechanisms, the study indicated that healthy foods reduce inflammation and enhance immunity and cognitive functions. It is noted, however, that the results did not show a clear link between diet and bone diseases like arthritis. Researchers recommend that the elderly focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats like canola oil and fish while limiting red meat and sugars. Although diet is not the only factor, improving it remains a simple and effective way to enhance health in old age.
It is worth mentioning that a previous scientific study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences revealed that human aging does not progress gradually but rather undergoes a sudden shift, usually starting at age 50, where organs, especially blood vessels, begin to deteriorate at a faster rate. The study was based on the analysis of tissue samples from 76 donors aged between 14 and 68, involving seven vital body systems such as the heart, liver, skin, lungs, and muscles, along with blood samples, according to the scientific journal “Nature.” Examination of these tissues revealed notable changes occurring in the organs between the ages of 45 and 55.
