BAFTA awardee Idris Elba recently attended the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, discussing projects that emphasize unique narratives.

Regarding his short film Dust to Dreams screened at the festival, Elba remarked, “I am drawn to places where voices are underserved, and narratives are often imposed on us instead of us shaping them,” he shared during a Q&A session, as reported by Variety.

Elba reflected on his early career at the festival, expressing his initial reluctance to portray “slaves.”

He mentioned making an agreement with his agent, stating, “We don’t want to portray slaves or just gangsters,” said the Thor star.

He also disclosed declining a role in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, which is about a slave ship revolt. “It was a matter of principle for me. I didn’t want to take that role,” Elba explained.

Having recently ventured into directing with his debut Yardie, Elba acknowledged a new phase in his career.

“Ultimately, I aspire to transition fully into directing,” he expressed. “I’ve acted for a long time and still enjoy it, but directing allows me to explore new creative avenues,” he added.

Dust To Dreams stars Nse Ikpe-Etim, Eku Edewor, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, and Constance Olatunde.

Elba is also working on another feature, This Is How It Goes, adapted from Neil LaBute’s play.

The Red Sea Film Festival will wrap up on December 13, 2025.
