The Ethiopian News Agency “ENA” reported today, Tuesday, that the opening ceremony was attended by several African leaders, most notably Kenyan President William Ruto, Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit. High-ranking Ethiopian officials and members of parliament and the council of the federation attended the event, along with military leaders headed by Chief of Staff General Berhanu Jula, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a major infrastructure project in Ethiopia’s history, and its inauguration comes after years of regional and international debate over its impact on the Nile River’s waters.

Egypt considers that the dam negatively affects its historical rights to the Nile waters, while Ethiopia argues that the dam will enhance development plans and electricity generation in the country.
