Inevitable War: Tensions Rise Between Israel and Syria

In a related context, a senior Israeli official accused the U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak, of “defending Turkish interests,” asserting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considers Barak “an element acting with hostility towards Israel,” according to him.

The official indicated that “Netanyahu sees Barak as being greatly influenced by Turkish interests in Syria and behaving as an ambassador serving Ankara,” as reported by the “Walla” website.

This comes after reports published by Israeli media revealed that “the Israeli army is preparing from southern Syria, which may resemble in nature the incursion that took place on October 7, 2023.”

According to Israeli intelligence estimates, “Iran is working through armed groups to prepare for a large-scale attack from southern Syria, aimed at opening a new pressure front on Israel.”

Israel had launched an aerial and ground military operation against Syria on Sunday, December 8, 2024, hours after the departure of the former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Israeli vehicles penetrated the demilitarized zone, Quneitra, and Mount Hermon under the pretext of “establishing a buffer zone” between Syrian territories and the Syrian Golan Heights originally occupied by Israel, with the support of the air force, which simultaneously carried out raids on various areas in Syria.

After the October 6, 1973 war, the Syrian and Israeli armies signed an agreement, and on the same date, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force was formed. A buffer zone was established between Syrian and Israeli forces in the Golan, stretching about 80 kilometers in length and varying in width from half a kilometer to 10 kilometers.
