This occurred during the 69th session of the General Conference of the Agency, as reported by Egypt’s Al-Ahram on Friday. It mentioned that 120 countries supported the decision, clearly reflecting the extent of international support for its objectives. The decision stipulates that all nuclear facilities in the Middle East be subjected to the Agency’s safeguards system without exception. It also calls on countries in the region to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and work towards establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone.

The adoption of the decision crowns Egypt’s efforts to achieve nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East and push for the expansion of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, according to Al-Ahram Portal. It noted that Cairo seeks to establish a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, emphasizing the responsibility of the international community to implement the legal obligations arising from the treaty.
