In a media interview, responding to the rapprochement and visits between Iran and Egypt, he said: “Talks with our brothers in Egypt are ongoing, and the relationship is good and beneficial.” Larijani continued: “There are no problems, but if America intervenes, that’s another matter,” pointing out in this context the existence of “common enemies” between Iran and Egypt, according to his expression.
He went on to consider that “the Americans might create problems that hinder this rapprochement,” further explaining: “The international arena is one of problems and changes,” according to Iranian news agency ‘Mehr.’ He added: “Egypt is currently a large, strong, and excellent country in the Arab world, and there is no problem between us.”
When asked if he intends to visit Cairo, Larijani replied: “Not currently, but it is possible in the future if a specific mission arises.” It is noteworthy that relations began to improve since last year, after the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed Tehran’s readiness to enhance and strengthen diplomatic relations with Egypt, which in turn welcomed the restoration of relations with Iran.
In recent months, there have been meetings between Egyptian and Iranian ministers on several occasions to discuss the possibility of developing relations between the two countries. Relations between Cairo and Tehran became tense following the success of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, when the leader of the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, decided to cut diplomatic relations with Egypt in response to its signing of the peace agreement with Israel.
