Iranian state television reported that “a phone conversation took place between the British Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor, Jonathan Powell, and the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani. They discussed ways to activate nuclear negotiations and address the so-called ‘Snapback’ mechanism, agreeing to continue exchanging views on organizing nuclear issues through negotiations.”
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the foreign ministers of France, Britain, and Germany, in addition to Kaja Kallas, held a phone conversation with him. During the call, they informed him of their intention to activate the sanctions snapback mechanism.
According to the statement, the ministers expressed their readiness to work over the next 30 days to “find a diplomatic solution” to prevent the return of previous UN Security Council resolutions. This mechanism stipulates that if Iran breaches its commitments, any party to the agreement can reinstate UN sanctions within a short period of time.
After the United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018, during President Donald Trump’s first term, debates intensified over the legitimacy of continuing this mechanism, while Tehran believes it lost its legal validity following that withdrawal.
