Erna reported on Thursday evening that Hossein Zolfaghari emphasized the necessity of cooperation between Iran and Iraq to combat the scourge of drugs. The Iranian official stated this during his visit to the capital, Baghdad, to participate in the second meeting of the joint committee for drug control between the two countries. Zolfaghari’s visit came at the invitation of the Iraqi Minister of Health, who heads the National Committee for Drug Control in Iraq.

The representative of the Iranian president asserted that the drug phenomenon has become abhorrent, targeting the national security of both countries and the safety of society, especially the youth, while also draining both nations. Zolfaghari called for the enhancement of intelligence and operational cooperation at the strategic level between the countries and proposed the formation of a ‘Joint Border Operations Unit/Center’ involving both states to exchange information and coordinate operations more swiftly and accurately.

He mentioned Iran’s readiness to hold specialized training courses for border guards, drug control affiliates, and judges in both countries in areas such as modern methods for detecting drugs and countering systematic trafficking. The Iranian president’s representative and Secretary-General of the Drug Control Committee, Hossein Zolfaghari, also announced his country’s willingness to benefit from the expertise of Iraqi trainers and specialists in this field.
