Larijani emphasized on the ‘X’ platform that ‘Tehran is keen on rational negotiations. However, the Americans’ focus on unrealistic issues, like restricting the missile program, is merely an attempt to thwart any chance of negotiation.’ So far, five rounds of indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington have been held with Omani mediation, as disagreements persist over uranium enrichment and lifting sanctions.
The United States demands the cessation of uranium enrichment and the dismantling of some aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, while Iran insists that enrichment is a right granted to it under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran conditions any agreement on the complete lifting of sanctions.
Tehran also emphasizes the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and demands serious guarantees of Washington’s commitment to any future agreement. It should be noted that during the administration of US President Donald Trump, specifically in May 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear agreement and re-imposed economic sanctions on Iran. In response, Tehran abandoned some of the restrictions on its nuclear activities as outlined in the agreement.
