The statement mentioned that “Iran’s talks with the three European countries will take place in New York at the level of foreign ministers and with the presence of the European diplomacy chief, Ms. (Kaja) Kallas.” It is noted that the negotiations may occur next Monday or Tuesday. The Supreme National Security Council stated that “our policy under the current circumstances is based on further cooperation to establish stability in the region,” emphasizing that “the European troika’s activation of the trigger mechanism is an ill-considered step.” On August 28, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany (the three EU member states) informed the UN Security Council of launching a mechanism to reinstate international sanctions on Iran, which were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. Subsequently, on September 19, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution to not renew sanctions on Iran, leading to the re-imposition of UN Security Council restrictions. Tensions have escalated since the 12-day war between Iran and Israel last June, which resulted in disruption and prompted Iran to suspend its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
