ABC halted Kimmel’s show on Wednesday after Carr threatened legal action against broadcasters airing Kimmel. Several local ABC affiliates, including Nexstar, which seeks FCC approval for a merger with Tegna, opted to drop the show.
On Friday, Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz criticized Carr’s threat as perilous.
President Donald Trump had earlier supported the suspension, suggesting broadcasters lose licenses over negative coverage of his administration, intensifying the free speech debate.
