Dubai’s Khamzat Chimaev made history Saturday night by winning the UFC middleweight title at UFC 319, decisively defeating Dricus Du Plessis by unanimous decision.
The 31-year-old, who gained UAE citizenship in February 2025, proudly displayed the nation’s flag in the Octagon after a clean 50-44 score across all judges’ cards. This victory extended his perfect record to 15-0.
This was a monumental moment for the UAE, as Chimaev, originally from the Chechen Republic, Russia, became the first Dubai-based fighter to win a UFC title, highlighting the nation’s growing impact on global mixed martial arts.
Chimaev set several UFC records during this fight. According to ESPN, he landed 529 strikes, breaking Max Holloway’s previous record of 447 from 2021.
Du Plessis, the reigning champion with a 23-2 record, was knocked down in the first 10 seconds and remained defensive throughout the match.
“All credit to Khamzat,” said the South African post-fight. “He beat me fair and square.”
Currently, Chimaev is focused on celebrating with his team rather than planning his next title defense. “I’m going back to the hotel to celebrate with my friends and enjoy this win,” he told reporters.
Chimaev’s victory is considered a landmark achievement for the UAE, which has hosted numerous UFC events in Abu Dhabi, establishing itself as a global combat sports hub.
