Lavrov added in his speech before world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly that “today we are effectively dealing with an attempt to carry out a coup aimed at burying the UN decision to establish a Palestinian state.” Lavrov emphasized that “Russia supports the principle of equality in sovereignty among all nations.” Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov said, “We are essentially facing an attempt to ‘bury’ the UN resolution establishing a Palestinian state.” He added that several Western governments recently announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, but they made this decision months ago. Lavrov pointed out, “The question arises: why did they wait all this time? It seems they hoped there would soon be nothing left to recognize. The situation requires urgent action to prevent this scenario, as strongly called for by participants in the high-level international conference on the Palestine issue.” He noted that Russia condemned the attack launched by the Palestinian Hamas movement against Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. He stressed that “nevertheless, there is no justification for the brutal killing of Palestinian civilians, nor for terrorist attacks. There is no justification for collective punishment of Palestinians in Gaza, where Palestinian children die from bombing and hunger, hospitals and schools are destroyed, and hundreds of thousands are left homeless. There is no justification for plans to annex the West Bank.” He also stated that the West’s rejection of the Russian-Chinese draft resolution on the Iranian nuclear program shows an intention to use blackmail to obtain unilateral concessions from Tehran. Regarding the Ukrainian conflict, Lavrov added that “ensuring Russia’s interests and the rights of Russians in areas controlled by Kyiv is the basis for negotiations on Ukraine’s security guarantees.” Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov said, “Russia’s security and vital interests must be reliably ensured. The rights of Russians and Russian speakers in territories still under the Kyiv regime’s control must be fully restored and respected. On this basis, we are ready to discuss Ukraine’s security guarantees.” He added, “So far, neither Kyiv nor its European sponsors seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation or wish to negotiate fairly.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned that Russia places high hopes on the continuation of the Russian-American dialogue in resolving the Ukrainian crisis. Lavrov said, “We have high hopes for the continuation of the Russian-American dialogue, especially after the Alaska summit. We see in the current US administration’s approach a desire not only to facilitate the search for realistic solutions to the Ukrainian crisis but also to develop practical cooperation without taking an ideological stance.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to the United States to maintain START treaty restrictions for one year would help create conditions to avoid a strategic arms race. Lavrov said in his speech at the UN General Assembly, “The new initiative proposed by President Vladimir Putin on September 22, regarding Russia’s readiness to adhere to the basic quantitative limits of the START treaty for one year after its expiration on February 5, 2026, aims to contribute to maintaining strategic stability, provided the United States acts similarly and avoids steps that violate the balance of existing deterrence capabilities. We believe that implementing our proposal will help create the necessary conditions to avoid a strategic arms race, maintain an acceptable level of predictability in the nuclear missile field, and improve the overall climate in Russian-American relations.” Lavrov added that Russia and the United States bear special responsibility for the global situation and avoiding risks. The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized, “We have high hopes for the continuation of the Russian-American dialogue, especially after the Alaska summit.” He added, “In the current US administration’s approach, we see not only a desire to facilitate the search for realistic solutions to the Ukrainian crisis but also a desire to develop pragmatic cooperation without taking an ideological stance.” World leaders gather in New York in September each year to deliver speeches over several days at the United Nations General Assembly, which begins its 80th session today, Tuesday. World leaders are seeking solutions to global challenges to promote peace, security, and sustainable development under the theme “Together We Achieve the Best: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.” After eight decades since its establishment, the United Nations remains the only place on earth where nations can meet to address their differences and find common ground, contributing to shaping their shared future.
