Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek expressed on Wednesday his versatility on the field for Thomas Tuchel as he returns to the national team after a seven-year hiatus.
Having played under Tuchel at Chelsea during the 2021-22 season, Loftus-Cheek was a late addition to the squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, following the withdrawal of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton due to injury.
“It’s been a long while,” the AC Milan player remarked at England’s training camp at St. George’s Park on Wednesday. “I was part of the 2018 World Cup squad and was called up the following season — then unfortunately, I ruptured my Achilles.
“Being away from the team for so long, I almost got accustomed to not being selected,” he continued. “You still aim to excel in club football, hoping for an opportunity. But I eventually put it out of my mind and became a fan of the team instead.”
Loftus-Cheek, who emerged from Chelsea’s academy as a central midfielder, acknowledges Tuchel for enhancing his adaptability.
“When Tuchel arrived at Chelsea, he suggested I play as a wing back. I initially resisted, saying ‘No way.’ Yet, I ended up playing there,” the 29-year-old recalled with a laugh. “Tuchel noted my strength and speed as suitable for the role.
“Under Tuchel, I played in various positions, and he appreciates my physical capabilities… In tournaments, being adaptable is beneficial.”
Despite a career marred by injuries, Loftus-Cheek is determined to help England secure their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.
“We were so close in 2018 (finishing fourth) and the team has come incredibly close in recent years. Watching those matches was nerve-wracking,” he commented. “I hope for the future we can achieve victory.”
England faces Andorra on Saturday at Villa Park, followed by a match against Serbia in Belgrade three days later.
