“Neenga yaaru? (who are you)”

With these words, the teaser for Mammootty’s upcoming film Kalamkaval kicks off, creating a buzz among Malayalam cinema enthusiasts eagerly anticipating its release.

Mammootty, a colossal figure in Malayalam cinema, had recently been the subject of speculation due to health concerns. Reports suggested he had been battling cancer, spending months away from the limelight for treatment. However, he has now returned, ready to reclaim his place.

The creators of Kalamkaval have built anticipation, promising a role for Mammootty unlike any he has portrayed in his illustrious career spanning over 450 films across five decades, encompassing both art-house and mainstream cinema. From relatable characters to menacing antagonists, Mammootty has embodied them all.

The teaser then shifts to a police station scene, with an inspector facing an unseen individual, suggesting Kalamkaval might be an intense revenge drama. Directed by newcomer Jithin K Jose, who previously contributed to Dulquer Salmaan’s gritty crime drama Kurup, the teaser features sweeping shots of a jeep navigating stunning landscapes and Vinayakan appearing notably grim.

The teaser saves its most striking moment for the end, showcasing Mammootty sporting sunglasses and a cigarette, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, topped with a wry smile.

Though an official announcement is pending, it’s expected that Mammootty will take on an anti-hero role, with Vinayakan playing a significant part.

The supporting cast includes Meera Jasmine, Gibin Gopinath, Gayatri Arun, and Rajisha Vijayan. The screenplay for Kalamkaval is co-penned by Jithin Jose and Jishnu Sreekumar.

Cinematography is helmed by Faisal Ali, while the music score is crafted by Mujeeb Majeed, known for his work on the critically acclaimed crime thriller Kishkinda Kaandam.

Earlier this month, the production company Mammootty Kampany revealed a poster depicting Mammootty seated with a menacing look against a giant web backdrop.

Accompanying the poster on social media was the caption, “What lies beneath is deadlier than you think. Kalamkaval On The Way.”

The film’s release date remains unconfirmed.

Mammootty’s last appearance was in the action thriller Bazooka, directed by newcomer Deeno Dennis, featuring Tamil and Malayalam filmmaker Goutham Menon, Shine Tom Chacko, and Iswarya Menon.
