A French media outlet reported that the public prosecutor in Milan has opened an investigation into hunting trips allegedly conducted in Sarajevo during the brutal Bosnian War, between the early and mid-1990s, following an official criminal complaint filed by the (Italian) writer Ezio Gavazzini.

The outlet added that the writer read about the events in the Italian press during the 1990s and began gathering evidence after watching a documentary in 2022, entitled ‘Sarajevo Safari,’ about wealthy Italians and other Westerners traveling to Sarajevo and paying the Serbian army large sums to hunt civilians of all ages.

The writer stated that a very large number of Italians were involved. There were Germans, French, and English individuals. People from all Western countries paid significant amounts to be transported there to shoot at civilians.

He continued that there were no political or religious motives. They were wealthy individuals who went there for enjoyment and to satisfy their personal desires. We are talking about people who love weapons, perhaps those who frequent shooting ranges or go on safaris in Africa.

Gavazzini pointed out that the identities of some Italian individuals allegedly involved have been identified, and they are expected to be questioned by prosecutors in the coming weeks. With the participation of the international community, the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed, forming three entities at the time: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republika Srpska, and the Brčko District.
