Through this project, Morocco aims to transform its strategic geographical location into a vital transit point, connecting Nigerian gas to European markets. This ambition strengthens its role in the regional energy system and grants it a stronger negotiating position with international partners. The project is considered a pivotal step, not limited to infrastructure alone, but also extending to profound economic and social transformations in transit countries. The Atlantic gas pipeline project is expected to create thousands of jobs and enhance integration between North and West Africa.

The idea of the Moroccan-Nigerian gas pipeline holds a central position in ongoing discussions between Morocco and Western investors. The National Office for Hydrocarbons and Minerals presented the progress of work and technical studies, affirming that the project has reached a strategic stage requiring solid financial partnerships to accelerate implementation.

The Moroccan-Nigerian gas pipeline extends over 6,000 kilometers, bringing Nigerian gas reserves to Morocco and then to Europe, giving it a continental dimension and transforming the pipeline into a tool for regional economic integration and strengthening North-South relations.

The Atlantic gas pipeline is designed to transport between 15 and 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, equivalent to supplying about 400 million people in 13 African countries. This figure reflects the strategic importance of the project in meeting energy needs and expanding the beneficiary base.

African leaders at the 66th ECOWAS summit at the end of 2024 approved the joint government agreement defining the responsibilities of participating countries. This agreement serves as a legal and institutional basis for launching the project on a foundation of transparency and regional cooperation.

Morocco has affirmed that “the project will allow African countries to access a sustainable and affordable energy source, as well as being a tool for economic and social integration.” Industry experts confirm that the Atlantic gas pipeline can drive industrial and economic development, providing jobs and boosting technological innovation.
