The local channel ‘BFM’ revealed that the Paris Court of Appeal has agreed to release Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been imprisoned in La Santé Prison since October 21st. The former president will be placed under judicial supervision.
Additionally, the court prohibited former President Nicolas Sarkozy from communicating with the current Minister of Justice, Gerald Darmanin. Earlier today, the Paris Court of Appeal’s prosecutor’s office requested the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from prison and that he be placed under judicial supervision, with a ban on contacting defendants and witnesses in the case of his campaign financing by Libya.
In 2018, the French judiciary charged Sarkozy on suspicion of Libya financing his 2007 presidential campaign, following a visit by the then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to Paris in 2006. Investigations indicated that the intermediary in those negotiations was named Ziad Takieddine, who investigations in November 2016 revealed had transported $5 million in cash from Tripoli to Paris at the end of 2006 and early 2007 and delivered it to former French Interior Minister Claude Guéant and Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy served as President of France from 2007 to 2012.
