On Wednesday evening, it was announced that the discovery of oil and gas in Egypt’s Western Desert is expected to add approximately 1,835 barrels of crude oil and 7 million cubic feet of gas daily, equivalent to 3,100 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum succeeded in putting the well on the production map, with extractable reserves estimated at around 5 million barrels of oil equivalent. This new oil and gas discovery confirms that the Western Desert remains a promising land for oil and gas opportunities, highlighting its importance as a major region attractive for investments.

Previously, teams from the Agiba company, in collaboration with Italy’s Eni, disclosed gas and oil production from the deep Masjid layer, one of the most challenging geological formations, at a depth exceeding 11,000 feet in the Western Desert. This achievement occurred in the North Rosa field in the same desert, and thanks to modern horizontal drilling techniques, it added about 7 million cubic feet of gas daily and 550 barrels of oil equivalent per day from this layer. This is a significant leap from a layer that used to produce at conventional rates, with production increasing sixfold, opening promising prospects for generalizing the experience and exploring more petroleum potentials.

This comes as the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, praised this success, affirming that it embodies the ability of companies to employ modern technology to uncover new petroleum and gas potentials, which enhances the Western Desert’s status as an attractive and promising area for investment and production opportunities.

On Tuesday, Badawi announced that “efforts continue to drill new wells in the Zohr gas field in the Mediterranean,” during a ministry statement, noting that “putting the Zohr-6 well into production contributed to adding about 65 million cubic feet of gas daily,” affirming that “the Zohr field is an integral part of every home in Egypt for its role in securing a significant part of the local market’s natural gas needs.”

Recently, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced the success of the offshore drilling rig “Saipem 10000” in completing the drilling of the “Zohr 6” well, which contributed to the current natural gas production rates.
