As the Asia Cup kicks off on Tuesday in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Pakistan is set on claiming their third title. Previously victorious in 2000 and 2012 in Bangladesh during the ODI format, Pakistan now aims for their inaugural T20I Asia Cup triumph.
Following their recent tri-series victory at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Pakistan seeks to maintain their winning momentum in the upcoming tournament.
Among the 17 players selected for the Asia Cup, 10 have previously participated in the event. Notably, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Khushdil Shah, and Mohammad Nawaz have experience in the T20I editions.
All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, who earned player of the tournament honors in the tri-series with 120 runs and 10 wickets, is the only squad member to have competed in both the 2016 and 2022 T20I editions.
Under head coach Mike Hesson, Pakistan has played 14 T20Is, securing 10 victories.
“I’m pleased with the team’s progress. Defeating Afghanistan in the Sharjah final was crucial, as it boosted our confidence against their spin-friendly conditions. Winning under pressure before the Asia Cup is vital,” said Hesson.
“An eight-team Asia Cup is fantastic for Asian cricket. It challenges us and expands the game. Our group with Oman, UAE, and India is tough. We’ve done our homework but need to adapt quickly. Staying focused amid external pressures is key.
“We must tackle each game, aim for the Super Four, and consistently perform to advance. The team managing these challenges best will win.”
Pakistan opens against Oman at Dubai Cricket Stadium on September 12, then faces India on September 14, and concludes the group stage against the UAE on September 17, all in Dubai.
In the tournament format, the top two teams from each group move to the Super Four stage. Here, teams compete in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the final at Dubai Cricket Stadium on September 28.
