Qatar Mediation Leads to Pakistan-Afghanistan Ceasefire

Cairo – Sputnik. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release: “A round of negotiations was held in Doha between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Afghanistan, mediated by the State of Qatar and the Republic of Turkey.” It added, “During the round, both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and lasting stability between the two countries.” Qatar expressed its hope that this important step would contribute to ending tensions on the borders between the two brotherly countries and serve as a solid foundation for sustainable peace in the region.

A few days ago, armed clashes broke out between Pakistan and Afghanistan at multiple points along the border areas following accusations by the Afghan government that Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghan territory at dawn last Friday, October 10. These clashes continued for days, resulting in dozens of casualties on both sides.

The western regions of Pakistan have witnessed an escalation of armed activities due to the spread of several anti-Pakistani state militant groups, such as the Pakistani Taliban, which are active in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan and Baloch separatist movements in the Balochistan province in the southwest of the country. Pakistan accuses its neighbor Afghanistan, controlled by the Afghan Taliban, of not taking decisive action against the Pakistani Taliban, providing them a safe haven to attack Pakistani territories. Pakistan also accuses its other neighbor, India, of financing and supporting these groups through Afghan proxies.
