The Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah is launching initiatives to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into private schools. These include teacher training, robotics programs, curriculum improvements, and an upcoming hackathon in partnership with Google.
The goal is to prepare students for a digital future and position the emirate as a leader in AI educational adoption.
Eight private schools, covering both primary and secondary levels, are testing AI and robotics programs. Initially club activities, these programs are now part of classroom learning.
Nasiba Alrawi, Innovation and Technology Manager at RAK DOK, told Khaleej Times, “We aim for students to experience AI in real-world scenarios and develop critical thinking through practical activities.”
Students are encouraged to apply AI practically, using robots to demonstrate mathematical concepts, for example. Competitions help maintain interest and integrate AI into the learning process long-term.
Curriculum Integration
This integration varies across school systems. Alrawi explained that Arabic schools allocate one hour weekly to AI basics, while British schools incorporate AI within computer science and other subjects.
“Our priority is teacher training for responsible AI use before fully introducing it into classrooms,” Alrawi said. She stressed that teachers need to understand AI tools before teaching them. Training also covers ethical use, ensuring AI enhances learning without encouraging copy-paste methods.
These reforms equip teachers and students with technology skills, making AI a lasting educational element. “Our vision is to empower teachers and students, preparing them for the future and confident in using AI responsibly,” Alrawi stated.
Upcoming Hackathon
Beyond curriculum changes, RAK DOK promotes hands-on innovation. A coding and AI hackathon, in collaboration with Google, will include categories like sustainability and competitions for schools and universities.
Alrawi noted that while still in planning, the hackathon will offer students and educators practical AI problem-solving experience. “It’s part of our effort to foster innovation and ensure Ras Al Khaimah stays in step with UAE education technology trends,” she said.
