The experiment was conducted on two groups of participants over 60 years old who did not suffer from cognitive impairment. One group attended choral singing classes that did not require special training, while the other group attended courses aimed at preventing falls, nutrition, lifestyle, and mental health. Both programs lasted for two years and included group lessons aimed at social integration. As a result, participants in both groups, by the end of the study, showed a reduced risk of depression and anxiety, according to the Journal of Psychiatric Research. Earlier, Finnish psychologists found that choral singing slows the progression of dementia and improves cognitive flexibility and the ability to switch between different thought processes. They noted that singing is associated with numerous health benefits, ranging from alleviating stress symptoms to improving lung function.
