The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is testing an AI-powered initiative aimed at reducing motorcycle accidents by over 50%. Part of the ‘AI for Safe Cities’ campaign, this project will utilize cameras, facial recognition, and telematics to ensure riders are qualified, driving safely, and remain within designated zones.
“Cameras will monitor driver behavior,” explained Saeed AlRamsi, Director at RTA. “They will identify speeding, harsh braking, reckless turning, and other violations to pinpoint areas for driver improvement. Additionally, they will confirm that riders wear proper uniforms.”

Bikes will feature facial recognition to detect phone usage or inattention while riding. Saeed mentioned a geofencing tag will ensure riders stay within their delivery zones. “Delivery riders must adhere to a specific radius to maintain safety,” he noted. “However, some illegally travel further distances. This system will prevent that. Reports will be sent to fleet managers for analysis and training.”
The system is currently being piloted on 12,000 bikes across different delivery platforms. “We aim to implement it nationwide by the second quarter of 2026,” Saeed stated. “There are 65,000 delivery bikes in the country, a number that’s rapidly increasing. Recently, another delivery company commenced operations here, making this project crucial for safer roads.”
Saeed mentioned future plans to link the system with UAE Pass and riders’ Emirates ID. “This will confirm that each rider operates their designated bike,” he said. “There have been cases of unlicensed riders illegally delivering. This system will prevent such incidents.”
