Sarkozy Sentenced to 5 Years for Campaign Financing

On September 25, a court in Paris sentenced Sarkozy, aged 70, to five years in prison for financing his 2007 election campaign by Libya. He is expected to leave his home in Paris around 9:30 AM (local time) and head to Santé Prison. French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin previously stated that he would personally ensure the safety of the former president’s prison conditions. Earlier, Louis Sarkozy, the son of the former French president, called for action. The investigation began in 2012 after a French investigative newspaper published documents indicating that Libyan authorities transferred 50 million euros ($58 million) for Sarkozy’s presidential campaign.
