The laboratory stated on Telegram: “Today, between 2 AM and 4 AM Moscow time, one of the largest solar prominences of the year detached from the sun. It had been observed over the past few days on the eastern edge of the star and was gradually moving towards Earth throughout this period.
According to data from the coronagraph observation device, the plasma filament was supposed to have already moved approximately 20 million kilometers from the sun.
Scientists explained that its path will pass precisely between Mercury and Earth, making it unlikely to collide with either. According to calculations, if this prominence had detached tomorrow, it would have hit the edge of Earth. However, if it had detached last Friday, the inevitable result would have been a direct hit to our planet Earth.
