TED Cancels Dubai TEDx Over $25K Speaker Fees

TED has canceled a TEDx event in Dubai and revoked the organizer’s license following a Khaleej Times report that exposed speakers being charged up to $25,000 for speaking slots.

The event, slated for October 16 at a luxury hotel in Dubai Marina, is now canceled, with TED initiating an internal probe into the issue.

This decision was made within 72 hours of the Khaleej Times report, which revealed offers of “guaranteed” TEDx speaking slots in exchange for large payments via PayPal and Stripe. TEDx events are community-driven, volunteer-run versions of TED, known for concise, impactful “Ideas Worth Spreading” talks.

Impact and Response

The October 4 report has prompted widespread feedback, with many professionals telling Khaleej Times they received similar offers, some even before the event was announced.

“I was quoted $15,000 for a premium slot,” said AK (name withheld), a Dubai professional. “They offered press coverage and an IMDb credit. I’m glad I didn’t proceed.”

Another, RK (name withheld), recounted receiving persistent messages from a WhatsApp contact promising “TEDx fame” for a quick payment.

Post-revelation, the organizers issued apologies and started refunding speakers who paid. Screenshots shared with Khaleej Times show refunds processed via PayPal and Stripe.

The organizers admitted to a “serious mistake,” stating their fear for the future, and have returned to India, confirming to Khaleej Times that their TEDx license is revoked, and the event is canceled.

TED confirmed an investigation is underway, emphasizing that authentic TEDx events are non-commercial and volunteer-led, with charging speakers violating core values.

Reaction from TEDx Community

The revelations have stirred strong responses from genuine organizers.

Pooja Uni, executive director and chief curator of TEDx Happiness Street, stated the report “hit home” for those who dedicate months to planning and training speakers without fees.

“Scams like this damage public trust and harm legitimate organizers who operate out of passion for ideas, not profit,” she noted, urging aspiring speakers to verify licenses on TED.com and avoid paid slots.
