The council, in an official statement, firmly rejected the announcement of the ‘Founding Sudan Coalition,’ supported by the Rapid Support Forces, to form a parallel government led by Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishi as Prime Minister, and a presidential council headed by Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan (Hemeti) and his deputy Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. The council considered these unilateral steps as undermining Sudan’s sovereignty and stability, and threatening regional peace. It also called on countries to refrain from any foreign intervention that fuels conflict and to adhere to international law and resolutions.
The council reaffirmed its full support for the efforts of the UN envoy Ramatan Lamamra in promoting dialogue between parties and civil society to find a sustainable solution to the conflict.
In April 2023, violent and widespread clashes erupted between forces and the Rapid Support Forces in various areas of Sudan, as both sides attempted to seize control of vital locations. Arab, African, and international parties mediated to halt the fighting, but these mediations failed to achieve a permanent ceasefire.
