Sudan’s Crisis: Impact on Children and Infrastructure

Sheldon Yett, the organization’s representative in Sudan, stated that “the situation in Sudan is worsening at an unprecedented rate, with children being deprived of the most basic life-saving services such as food, healthcare, and clean water,” according to Sudan Tribune.

The UNICEF representative visited the states of Al Jazeera and Khartoum last week after they were reclaimed by the Sudanese army, following months of control by the Rapid Support Forces, which caused extensive damage to the civilian infrastructure during their presence in the areas, according to local media.

The UNICEF representative warned that Sudan is “facing an imminent disaster that could lead to irreparable harm to an entire generation of children, not due to a lack of resources to save them, but as a result of the international community’s failure to act on the necessary scale and speed.”

The war broke out on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti) in various parts of Sudan, affecting health services and living conditions of Sudanese people, especially exacerbating the crisis of internal and external displacement.

Arab, African, and international parties mediated to cease fire, but these mediations have not succeeded in reaching a permanent halt to the fighting.
