On Wednesday, Google introduced its new Pixel 10 smartphones, highlighting the artificial intelligence (AI) features integrated into its Android operating system.
The new lineup includes a foldable phone, an enhanced Pixel smartwatch, and earbuds, all designed to work seamlessly with AI and each other.
“Pixel remains the premier way for users to experience Google’s cutting-edge AI,” said product manager Tyler Kugler during a media briefing.
While Pixel phones capture a small share of the high-end smartphone market dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi, Google’s custom hardware showcases the potential of its Android OS.
Samsung, often the world’s leading smartphone seller, uses Google’s Android software in its devices.
“Google initially created Pixel devices to showcase technology, reduce Android fragmentation, and drive innovation,” noted Forrester principal analyst Thomas Husson.
“A decade later, the aim is not to lead the market but to showcase the value of Google’s integrated ecosystem,” he added.
This strategy encourages handset makers to adopt Google’s platform, akin to how Apple links its devices with its software.
As Apple appears behind in the competitive AI space, Google emphasizes AI integration across its products to rival Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.
“Though Pixel’s market share is under 5%, it remains a premium innovation lab in the AI era,” Husson said of the Pixel line.
It also acts as “a counter to Apple’s integrated strategy while maintaining strategic partnerships with Samsung and the Android ecosystem,” added Husson.
The AI in new Pixel phones empowers the Gemini AI assistant to “see” through cameras, offering insights on locations, objects, or situations, according to Kugler.
Google isn’t alone in embedding AI in phones. Samsung focuses on AI in its Galaxy line and recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold7.
Google’s team highlighted the Pixel Watch 4 as a major redesign, offering the most significant update yet.
Features include refined fitness tracking that distinguishes between walking, cycling, or tennis activities. The Pixel Watch also allows users to interact with the Gemini AI assistant from their wrist.
The Gemini AI adapts to the speaker’s mood and can “see” through the phone camera to suggest photos, according to Google.
