Authorities have apprehended a suspect in the deadly shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university, President Donald Trump announced on Friday. The arrest concludes an intense search that Trump labeled as a pursuit of a “heinous assassin.”

The shooter had evaded law enforcement for over 24 hours following Wednesday’s incident, where a sniper’s single shot killed Kirk during his event at Utah Valley University in Orem.

“I believe we have captured him,” Trump stated in a Fox News interview, noting that someone acquainted with the suspect reported him.

Earlier, US officials reported recovering the bolt-action rifle suspected in Kirk’s murder and released images of a person of interest.

The FBI distributed blurry security camera images depicting a “person of interest” in a black shirt, dark sunglasses, and a baseball cap. The shirt appeared to feature a bald eagle with a US flag backdrop.

Kirk, a writer, podcast host, and staunch Trump supporter, was instrumental in rallying young voters for the Republican Party.
