The official Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that the discussions focused on stopping interference in Syria’s internal affairs, enhancing stability in southern Syria, monitoring the ceasefire in As-Suwayda Governorate, and reactivating the 1974 disengagement agreement, which stipulates halting combat operations between Syria and Israel and overseeing the demilitarized zone by a UN force.
The meeting lasted four hours and the talks come within the framework of “U.S. diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in Syria and preserving its territorial unity and integrity,” according to SANA.
This meeting is considered an extension of a similar meeting at the end of July, between Al-Shaybani and the Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, while diplomatic sources spoke of other direct meetings held between the parties in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
It is noted that the spiritual leader in Israel, Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, met in the French capital, Paris, with the U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Brak, in a meeting attended by Minister Saleh Tarif, focusing on discussing the situation in southern Syria.
During the meeting, Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif emphasized the necessity of releasing all captives from both sides, while also stressing the importance of reaching a comprehensive agreement to end the crisis in Syria.
