The media department of the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement published by the official news agency ‘SANA’ that the historic meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Hassan Al-Shibani confirmed the launch of a new phase of political and military understanding between the two countries. This phase is based on respecting Syrian sovereignty and supporting the unity of Syrian territories.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry added that the meeting represents a strong political indicator of the beginning of the process of restoring Syrian-Russian relations, which enhances regional balance and serves to empower the Syrian state.
Lavrov, following his talks with his Syrian counterpart Asad Al-Shibani in the Russian capital Moscow, said: ‘We are ready to provide any possible assistance to the Syrian people in reconstruction after the end of the conflict, and we agreed to continue dialogue on these issues.’
Lavrov pointed out that ‘Russia has always been against using Syrian territories as a field for geopolitical competition among other powers and settling scores between different countries,’ adding: ‘Therefore, we constantly call for unifying international efforts in one direction to normalize the situation in the region.’
