She added, “Shar’a, who is still on the United Nations’ terrorism list, will be the first Syrian leader to address the General Assembly in 67 years.” She noted that this will be the second direct meeting between Trump and Shar’a. This rare meeting between leaders and Syria is scheduled to take place before the annual United Nations General Assembly, according to Israel’s Channel 24.
Sources indicate that the meeting will focus on what will be the first step towards a normalization agreement between the two countries, similar to the Abraham Accords. This potential meeting is expected to have a profound impact on the regional balance of power, especially in light of Syria’s recent attempts to regain its influence in the region after years of isolation due to the civil war.
The sources added that one of the key issues is the insistence of the new Syrian government on Israel’s withdrawal from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, which Israel seized as a security buffer zone after overthrowing the Assad regime in late 2024.
It is noteworthy that U.S. President Donald Trump met Ahmad Shar’a on May 13th in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and during the meeting, he announced the lifting of sanctions across Syria. He also informed him of the necessity to take several measures, primarily normalization. The Israeli army is working on building nine military sites in the area as a step to enhance its long-term military presence, according to Arab media.
