Tom Williams: Financial Clarity in Dubai

For St James’s Place Middle East adviser Tom Williams, money goes beyond mere numbers. Growing up in the UK, he noticed how financial decisions could significantly impact people’s futures, often without their awareness until it was too late. With nearly 12 years in advising and a CII qualification, he understands that clarity is as much about feeling as it is about spreadsheets; clients often remember how they felt when decisions became straightforward and their path became clear. This early interest evolved into a career dedicated to helping people gain clarity and confidence in their finances. ‘For me, it’s never been solely about the numbers,’ he says. ‘It’s about what those numbers help people accomplish.’

Embarking on a New Chapter in Dubai

Tom’s move to Dubai was inspired when his partner, Amanda, received an opportunity there. For Tom, the relocation was more than a personal change. “This is a place where the financial landscape is evolving. I couldn’t resist being part of it.”

Now, he thrives in a country where ambition and speed influence both professional and personal life. A typical weekend might involve cycling at sunrise in the desert, playing padel in the afternoon, and dining with a view of the Marina. However, the transition has not been without its challenges. Establishing the UAE practice for St. James’s Place, a London-listed financial advisory leader with over a million global clients, while maintaining connections with his UK clients, has demanded discipline and focus. “In Dubai, trust is fostered face-to-face,” he explains. “Emails or video calls aren’t enough. Being present, part of the community, and genuinely engaged is what truly matters here.”

Assisting Global Clients

Joining St. James’s Place provided Tom the platform to build credibility and autonomy as a top adviser. “SJP gave me the assurance of a well-regulated brand while allowing me to concentrate on what I love most: helping people make confident decisions,” he says. The firm’s global reputation is valued in a region where clients seek reassurance as much as opportunity.

Tom’s clientele reflects the international demographic of the UAE. Many are expatriates from the UK, Australia, South Africa, Europe, and increasingly Asia, often senior professionals or business owners with assets and responsibilities spread across borders. Relocation, career transitions, family planning, and retirement are common times when they seek guidance.

Tom assists them in understanding UK pensions, residency rules, tax-efficient property sales, and inheritance planning across different legal systems.

“Relocating is complex. People can feel overwhelmed by pensions, property, and cross-border tax issues. Seeing them relax and refocus, knowing someone has their back, is why I do this.”

For example, a UK professional moving to Dubai with around £420,000 across several pensions (consolidated), a £90,000 ISA, and a London flat to sell: Tom timed residency, simplified investments, set a dirham cash buffer, and coordinated the sale – resulting in optimized FX, clearer income, and aligned inheritance between the UK and the UAE. Illustrative only, not advice.

Having worked in both London and Dubai, Tom notices a clear difference. He describes the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) as modern, collaborative, and dynamic, contrasting with London’s more traditional and institutional atmosphere.

Future Prospects

He has also observed significant changes in how people manage their wealth. Stronger regulation has increased market trust. More women are actively managing their finances, a shift he feels is long overdue. Cross-border planning, once considered optional, is now essential, especially as UK tax rules change. Looking forward, he anticipates technology, tighter regulation, and consolidation will shape the industry, but believes success will still rely on trust and adaptability.

For Tom, money represents freedom and choice. “It’s a tool, not a trophy,” he says.

His approach is straightforward, focusing discussions on lifestyle and long-term goals, not spreadsheets and jargon. Clients, he observes, may not remember every technical detail, but they always recall how they felt. “If someone leaves a meeting less anxious and more confident, that’s the win.”

Outside work, Tom enjoys playing golf, running with his dog, Dotty, or cooking with Amanda. He’s also nurturing a passion for fine dining and exploring new culinary experiences, one meal at a time. Looking ahead, he envisions building a practice that connects the UAE and the UK, supporting clients through life changes that bring them to Dubai and beyond. Personally, he hopes to be married, possibly starting a family, and still finding time for those early desert rides.
