The UAE’s app economy is evolving into a profitable phase, prioritizing loyalty and retention over mere user acquisition, as revealed by new data from AppsFlyer at the inaugural MAMA Dubai event.

The study reveals two key trends: a sevenfold increase in finance app installations from 2021 to 2024 and a 50% annual decrease in Android ad fraud, indicating growing trust and marketing sophistication in the ecosystem.

“The UAE is establishing a new global standard for sustainable app growth,” stated Sarah Maina, Regional Manager for France and the Middle East at AppsFlyer. “Marketers here demonstrate that investing in data integrity, user trust, and creative innovation leads to natural profitability.”

Shifting from Scale to Sustainability

The UAE market is moving from acquisition-driven expansion to quality engagement. Finance, shopping, and lifestyle apps are leading growth. Finance apps alone saw a 700% rise in installs, driven by the nation’s shift to a cashless economy and rapid fintech adoption.

“Finance has grown by 700% since 2021, which is extraordinary,” Maina highlighted at the event. “This surge is largely due to the UAE’s move toward a cashless society and significant digital transformations in traditional banks. The UAE is leading globally in digital banking transformation.”

Shopping apps are flourishing, supported by hybrid retail models and the rise of buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) solutions. Meanwhile, gaming—once dominant—has plateaued, prompting developers to innovate with hybrid monetization and engaging in-app experiences.

Loyalty Over Installs

Maina pointed out that growth is now beyond downloads: “Marketing investments are now centered on loyalty, retention, and re-engagement. The market has matured, with a focus on keeping users engaged and loyal.”

This change is reflected in user acquisition spending, which increased by 32% on Android and 36% on iOS, showing a shift towards value-driven engagement. Ad fraud, a historical challenge in the region, has significantly dropped—down 50% on Android and 25% on iOS—thanks to improved education and technology.

The Rise of Super Apps

E-commerce and retail are also transforming. “There are fewer new app installs but more focus on re-engagement and loyalty,” Maina explained. “Super apps that combine shopping, travel, and payments in one ecosystem are gaining momentum.”

With UAE users spending 4.6 hours daily on their phones, brands are using data and AI to personalize experiences and optimize campaigns in real-time. “Creativity and data are now intertwined,” Maina added. “It’s not just about downloads—it’s about user actions post-download.”

As the UAE app economy matures, the message is clear: profitability stems from trust, loyalty, and innovation—not sheer volume.
