The UAE is ramping up its digital security measures as cyber threats escalate. The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has warned that 70% of smart home devices are susceptible to cyberattacks if not adequately protected.

Home smart technologies, such as voice assistants, surveillance systems, smart lighting, and air conditioning units, are increasingly becoming targets for hackers due to low security awareness among users and reliance on default device settings.

The council highlighted risky behaviors such as keeping voice assistants always active and connected to unsecured networks or sharing the main Wi-Fi password with guests, which can expose home data and allow unauthorized control of devices.

The council also pointed out the dangers of baby monitors, commonly used in many homes. These devices, if not secured, can be easily hacked, allowing intruders to record conversations, track movements, or even interact with children and family members.

To minimize risks, the CSC recommends households use strong passwords, update smart device software regularly, and manage all smart devices through a single central hub to limit potential entry points. It also advises turning off voice assistants when not in use, enabling security and privacy features, and keeping smart devices on a separate network from the main household Wi-Fi.

As part of its “Cyber Pulse” campaign, the council is dedicating this week to addressing threats to smart home devices, aiming to educate families on system updates and practical measures to combat cyber threats.
