The UAE National Day festivities have illuminated the nation with vibrant parades, family picnics, and getaways, courtesy of the extended weekend. Yet, some individuals continue their work, honoring the country in their unique ways.
On December 2, Emirati pilot Ahmed will be soaring through the skies, away from his family and homeland. For him and many colleagues, it’s business as usual. “Many are on duty. Numerous others in various fields work during National Day and even Eid,” he noted.
Originally from Sharjah, Ahmed usually celebrates with his family when home, not necessarily on December 2. “We might gather a day or two earlier, as long as everyone is in the country,” he shared.

Onboard, there are no celebrations, but special events occur at his workplace.
“My work is a small contribution to my country, on National Day or any other day, in gratitude for the opportunities and support the nation has provided,” he expressed.
Seas of Celebration
Barge captain Faisal Al Mansoori commemorated Eid Al Etihad by raising the UAE flag on his offshore oil rig, visible to all. Crew members gathered to enjoy Arabic coffee, sweets, and a cake adorned with the nation’s flag.
“We sometimes play national songs, share stories, and memories of service and homeland. Even the foreign crew joins us, and we explain the occasion’s significance. There’s always a joyful atmosphere,” he mentioned.
Though working on National Day, Faisal feels it’s still a celebration of the nation through service. “True celebration isn’t just about songs and flags. It’s about standing in your place, ensuring work continues, and safeguarding the country’s interests, even from afar.”
He reminisced about traditional celebrations with drums, chants, and street parades. “There’s a bit of homesickness being away from family during celebrations, but immense pride too,” Al Mansoori stated. “Being on site is serving the nation.”
Pakistani taxi driver Noor Sher, starting his 12-hour shift at 5am, remains enthusiastic about National Day despite working. The day isn’t too busy, as people are home enjoying the holiday.
Sher usually celebrates by visiting the beach, mingling with others. He visited Heera Beach before his shift, where crowds gathered for festivities. He considers the UAE his second home after over 20 years here.
