In a presidential statement released to the United Nations today, Sunday, the council called for adherence to the ceasefire and ensuring the protection of civilians. Additionally, it emphasized the urgent need to facilitate humanitarian aid access to Sweida and all parts of Syria. The council also demanded that the Syrian authorities hold all individuals involved in acts of violence accountable, regardless of their affiliations, describing foreign fighters as “terrorists.” It welcomed the Syrian government’s statement condemning the events and confirming the initiation of investigations to hold those responsible accountable. The council urged that these investigations be swift, transparent, and in accordance with international standards. The council expressed its opposition to all forms of foreign intervention in the matter, warning that such interventions undermine efforts to restore stability. It affirmed that the political solution in Syria must be inclusive under Syrian leadership, ensuring the participation of all sects and protecting citizens’ rights without discrimination.
On July 19, the Syrian presidency announced a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in Sweida, calling on all parties, without exception, to “fully adhere to this decision, cease all combat activities immediately in all areas, ensure the protection of civilians, and secure unhindered humanitarian aid access.”
