The UAE is set to enhance the review and auditing processes for issuing freelance visas, known as Green Residency, according to a report by Emarat Al Youm on Sunday, citing a senior official.

The aim of this increased scrutiny is to safeguard rights and regulate the market to benefit all parties, stated General Lieutenant Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

The UAE Freelance Visa is a key government initiative designed to support self-employment and the talent economy, allowing individuals to legally engage in their professional activities without needing a sponsor or traditional employer.

Freelance Visa holders are granted legal residency and permits to conduct their activities, as long as they meet the necessary conditions. However, the visa does not allow sponsoring others or employing workers. Check out this Khaleej Times report to learn how to apply for a freelance visa in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Al Marri further highlighted the nation’s commitment to transitioning towards a flexible economy.

He dismissed recent social media rumors about the suspension of freelance visas in the UAE, confirming that these visas remain available through official channels.

Such rumors won’t undermine the community’s and investors’ trust in the UAE’s environment.

He also mentioned that some cases of misuse or illegal visa trading were identified. Appropriate actions were taken to protect the labor market and ensure the system’s integrity, Al Marri clarified.

He noted that the spread of rumors coincides with rising demand for this specific type of UAE visa.
