Universities in the UAE are intensifying efforts to ensure students are not just academically skilled but also prepared for their careers.

By offering practical experiences, mentorship, and industry partnerships, these institutions are closing the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice.

Experts note that the dynamic job market requires digital literacy and ongoing education to prepare graduates for future roles.

Transforming ideas into successful ventures

“The CUD Hub Incubator is crucial in this process. It offers a collaborative space where students turn concepts into successful ventures, backed by mentorship, seed funding, and access to industry networks. Through this platform, students gain practical experience in entrepreneurship and innovation, learning to align their business solutions with global priorities like the SDGs,” stated Dr Rami El Khatib, Vice President-Student Affairs, Canadian University Dubai (CUD).

Beyond the incubator, Canadian University Dubai collaborates with organizations like GMG, Majid Al Futtaim Properties, Kalvad, Osborne Engineering, and ImInclusive. “These partnerships allow our students and faculty to engage in practical, real-time projects, often in the form of competitions, market research, or industry-specific solutions.”

Internships and networking are key to CUD’s strategy. “Our internship program offers students practical experience across various sectors, with professional networking opportunities at events such as the ‘Career Fair’ and the ‘Employer’s Caravan’. We further these connections through initiatives like coffee chats and site visits, enabling students to interact directly with industry professionals,” El Khatib noted.

Global mentorship and alumni tracking

CUD’s Entrepreneurial Mentorship Programme links students with CEOs and industry leaders worldwide. “This initiative provides invaluable mentorship, fosters international knowledge exchange, and equips students with unique insights into leadership, strategy, and innovation at top business levels.”

To track outcomes, the university partners with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research through a Graduate Destination Survey, monitoring alumni nine months post-graduation to analyze employment trends and further education.

Integrated industry learning

Dr Anita Patankar, Executive Director of Symbiosis Dubai, highlighted the significance of real-world experience. “We understand that industry exposure is crucial for creating career-ready graduates. Symbiosis Dubai has strong partnerships with leading companies, including Godrej Properties, Sobha Realty, Jumeirah Group, DP World, Dubai Police, CAFU, Cisco, Sony, Odoo, Behaviour Enrichment, Edu Scan, Ednex, among others.”

Symbiosis Dubai utilizes initiatives like ‘Symbi Connects’, allowing senior industry leaders to share insights, and ‘Symbi Inspires’, connecting students with over 1,300 UAE alumni for mentorship. Patankar added, “Hands-on projects, interdisciplinary workshops, global immersion opportunities, and enriching internships ensure learning goes beyond the classroom… For instance, two of our MBA students left well-paying jobs to start their own media agency — a startup developed at Symbiosis Dubai within a year.”

The university’s strategy has shown positive results, “including a 98% internship placement rate this year”, demonstrating how industry-integrated learning and mentorship prepare students for success.

Developing global leaders

INSEAD recently introduced its Master in Finance (MIF), a pre-experience degree for recent graduates and young professionals.

Mark Stabile, Dean of Degree Programmes, stated, “The skills that distinguish professionals are changing. It’s no longer enough to be technically skilled — future leaders must also be globally aware, analytically adept, and able to adapt swiftly to change. Finance today demands more than technical know-how; it requires leadership, resilience, and a global perspective.”

The MIF program is crafted to meet market needs while shaping globally aware and adaptable financial professionals ready to make an immediate impact.

Experiential learning at its core

At BITS Pilani Dubai, the Practice School (PS) Division is central to student employability.

Gomathi Bhavani R, Associate Dean – Practice School and Industry Engagement, said, “Our Career Services Division complements this by offering career counseling and coaching, hosting industry experts, and organizing workshops in leadership, communication, and professional conduct. These initiatives facilitate networking between employers and graduates — crucial for enhancing employability in the UAE context.”

The Practice School offers two levels of internships:

  • PS I: An eight-week summer internship after the second year of undergraduate study.

  • PS II: A full-semester (5.5 months) internship in the final year.

Through this program, BITS Pilani Dubai collaborates with over 300 industry partners across sectors including government, aviation, logistics, consulting, banking, healthcare, hospitality, engineering, and manufacturing.

“Moreover, we have established mechanisms to collect both formal and informal feedback from industry partners and alumni after each internship and employment cycle. This continuous exchange allows us to refine and enhance the skill sets of future cohorts,” added Bhavani.
