In the UAE, ultra-fast delivery has transformed from a luxury to a standard expectation, revolutionizing how businesses meet customer needs. Same-day or even same-hour delivery is now the norm, driven by a tech-savvy population that values convenience. Retailers, e-commerce platforms, and F&B operators are swiftly adapting with investments in logistics, AI systems, and last-mile delivery networks.
UAE Consumers Lead the Charge
This year’s PwC survey highlights the UAE as having some of the region’s most seasoned online shoppers. While online shopping is increasing across the Middle East, UAE millennials are at the forefront: 10% boast over a decade of e-commerce experience, surpassing the regional average of 5%.
These consumers also prioritize after-sales service (37% vs 31% regionally), Click & Collect (27% vs 22%), and loyalty programs (64% vs 55%).
The survey underscores the UAE’s prominence in cultivating experienced online shoppers.
Retail Adapts to Demographic Shifts
In the UAE, tech-savvy shoppers are more inclined to pay extra for same-day delivery than their regional counterparts.
PwC’s study shows 63% of UAE residents would pay more for same-day delivery, compared to 54% in Saudi Arabia.
Norma Taki, Retail and Consumer Partner at PwC Middle East, emphasized demographic trends will intensify this shift. “With one of the fastest-growing and youngest populations globally, the Middle East’s demographic expansion is profound. By 2100, the Arab population is expected to nearly double to 500 million, with half under 24. These shifts, along with global megatrends, indicate a transformative phase for Middle Eastern retail, albeit at a unique pace compared to more developed nations.”
As speed becomes standard, businesses are challenged to deliver both reliably and sustainably.
Strategy Shaped by Consumer Expectations
“Today’s consumers demand convenience; it’s a necessity,” said a spokesperson from Apparel Group. “Our mission is to consistently surpass these expectations. In 2024, 6thStreet rolled out same-day express delivery, and by April 2024, we introduced a 60-minute delivery service with outstanding feedback. Customers appreciate the ability to send last-minute gifts or timely deliveries for special events – enhancing their lifestyle significantly.”
Meeting this demand required reimagining traditional logistics. Apparel Group innovatively transformed brand stores into micro-fulfillment centers using technology.
“We understood fashion retail demands a unique model,” the spokesperson explained. “Customer preferences vary, and our product range can’t be mirrored in dark stores. Using geo-fencing and in-store e-commerce fulfillment, we created a solution leveraging live inventory. We’ve built an internal network of pickers, runners, and riders, ensuring complete control over the customer experience from store to doorstep. This is a prime example of utilizing our omnichannel presence to offer innovative solutions that delight our customers.”

The UAE stands out with more experienced online shoppers than typical in the region.
Maintaining Quality Amid Speed
With delivery times now as short as an hour, maintaining quality is crucial. Apparel Group insists speed should not compromise service standards.
“6thStreet’s promise is simple: delight the customer, every time,” the spokesperson stated. “Each order undergoes a rigorous in-store quality check, with pickers verifying products against a multi-point checklist within 15 minutes. Reliability matches quality, ensuring all orders are punctual. If we fail, our ‘On Time or On Us’ guarantee refunds the shipping fee. This proactive stance enhances customer trust and commitment to service excellence.”
Loyalty Through Swift Service
The company acknowledges the higher costs of 60-minute delivery but sees it as a strategic investment.
“Though 60-minute delivery incurs higher operational costs than standard shipping, it offers unmatched customer experiences, reflected by a Net Promoter Score of 76,” the spokesperson shared. “This elevated service has increased our repeat purchase rate by 50%. Customers value not only speed but the confidence and convenience it provides. This customer-focused growth enables us to scale sustainably, benefiting both our business and customers.”
Embracing the Future: AI and Drones
Apparel Group is investing in emerging technologies to shape the future of delivery.
“Our innovation commitment extends beyond current solutions,” the spokesperson said. “We have a dedicated AI team developing advanced demand forecasting and automated replenishment systems to meet evolving needs.
Our AI-powered agents dynamically reallocate riders in real-time, optimizing routes to enhance delivery efficiency and customer experience. Drone delivery excites us, and we’re collaborating with industry pioneers to bring this capability to market, solidifying our role as leaders in redefining retail logistics.”
As the UAE leads in digital retail, it’s clear that speed alone won’t determine success. Businesses must balance fast fulfillment with reliability, quality, and innovation, while building trust and loyalty among sophisticated consumers. With tech-savvy millennials driving demand, and AI and drones on the horizon, the retail revolution in the region is just beginning. The businesses that adapt swiftly will set future standards.
