In a presidential statement released to the United Nations today, Sunday, the council called for adherence to the ceasefire and ensuring the protection of civilians, in addition to urgently facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to As-Suwayda and all parts of Syria. The council also demanded that the Syrian authorities hold all those involved in acts of violence accountable, regardless of their affiliations, describing foreign fighters as ‘terrorists,’ while welcoming the Syrian government’s statement condemning the events and confirming the initiation of investigations to hold those responsible accountable. The council requested that these investigations be swift, transparent, and in accordance with international standards.
The council expressed its rejection of all forms of external interference in the matter, warning that such interventions undermine efforts to restore stability, emphasizing that the political solution in Syria must be comprehensive and led by Syrians, ensuring the participation of all factions and the protection of citizens’ rights without discrimination.
On July 19, the Syrian presidency announced a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in As-Suwayda, calling on all parties, without exception, to ‘fully adhere to this decision and immediately cease all hostilities in all areas, ensuring the protection of civilians and securing the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.’
