Unidentified Shells and Tensions in Damascus

The Syrian “Al-Ikhbariya” channel reported on Tuesday evening that unidentified shells fell in the vicinity of Mezzeh Airport in the capital, Damascus. An explosion was heard and its nature is being verified. Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported hearing an explosion in the vicinity of Damascus, stating that its nature is being verified and that specialized authorities have spread around the military Mezzeh Airport to begin investigations to determine the source of the shells. The agency quoted a military source stating that the area around Mezzeh military airport in Damascus was targeted by three unidentified shells without causing injuries or material damage.

In a related context, Syrian media reported on Tuesday that three people were injured by Israeli army gunfire in the town of Khan Arnabah in the Quneitra countryside in southern Syria. The reports stated: “Three people were injured by gunfire in the town of Khan Arnabah in the Quneitra countryside, namely, Mohammad Ahmad Al-Dabbak, Abdul Nasser Mohammad Al-Bakr, and Basel Kasem Al-Khatib.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed earlier his hope to “reach an agreement to disarm and protect the Druze.” Netanyahu stated: “We will continue to control our positions in Syria.”

Israel began its operations on Sunday, December 8, 2024, just hours after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria. Israeli machinery penetrated the buffer zone, Quneitra, and Mount Hermon under the pretext of establishing a buffer zone between Syrian territories and the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, supported by the air force which simultaneously launched raids on various areas in Syria.
