UNIFIL Discovers Tunnel Network in Southern Lebanon

According to the Lebanese National News Agency, the incident resulted in the death of 6 soldiers and injuries to others of varying degrees. Last Thursday, UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti announced the discovery of a wide network of tunnels around towns in southern Lebanon.

Tenenti said, “As part of its routine activities carried out under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and in close coordination with the Lebanese army, UNIFIL discovered a wide network of fortified tunnels around the towns of Tyre Harfa, Zebqin, and Naqoura,” according to the Lebanese National News Agency.

Tenenti confirmed that the network contains a number of hideouts, artillery pieces, multiple rocket launchers, along with hundreds of shells and rockets, anti-tank mines, and other explosive devices.

Earlier, the French battalion in UNIFIL uncovered and seized a tunnel network and a large quantity of materials. Press information indicated that the tunnel entered by the battalion resembles the tunnels publicized by Hezbollah’s war media during the war with Israel.
