Reports indicate that the United States is rebuilding an airport dating back to World War II on Tinian, a small strategic island in the Pacific Ocean within the Northern Mariana Islands. This island was used as a launch platform for American nuclear strikes on Japan 80 years ago. According to Kyodo News Agency, the airport restoration is part of the United States’ policy to contain China in the Asia-Pacific region.
At the same time, the island’s mayor, Edwin Aldan, stated to the agency that the island, which has a population of 2,000, does not wish to become a party to armed conflicts. He emphasized that the island’s residents are concerned about its small size, which could prevent them from finding shelter in the event of a military strike.
