In a historic moment for one-day international cricket, the West Indies bowled an entire 50 overs of spin on Tuesday in their second ODI against Bangladesh, clinching victory after a thrilling super over.
Holding Bangladesh to 213 for seven, the West Indies matched that score with 213-9 in their 50 overs. They then scored 10 runs in the super over to secure a one-run win, tying the three-match series 1-1.
The game featured a record-breaking 92 overs of spin, surpassing the previous high of 78 overs.
Opting for a spin-heavy lineup, the West Indies dropped pace bowlers Jayden Seales and Romario Shepherd, allowing five spinners to bowl 10 overs each after Bangladesh chose to bat first in Mirpur.
Gudakesh Motie, a left-arm spinner, claimed three wickets for 65 runs. Alick Athanaze was economical with just 14 runs conceded and two wickets, while Akeal Hosein took two for 41.
Roston Chase and Khary Pierre gave up 44 and 43 runs respectively in their spells, as the West Indies avoided using their sole pace option, Justin Greaves.
This marked the first time a team bowled 50 overs of spin in an ODI, surpassing Sri Lanka’s previous record of 44 overs of spin in a 1996 match.
The strategy was a surprising shift for a team historically known for its formidable fast bowlers.
Mustafizur Rahman, a fast-medium bowler for Bangladesh, conceded 40 runs in eight overs, while the other five home bowlers were spinners.
