According to officials, the field’s production is estimated at 460,000 barrels per day, noting that “the reason for the closure is due to a leak in the export pipeline.” The West Qurna 2 field is one of the largest oil fields in the world, with its production representing nearly 0.5% of global oil production.

A few days ago, five informed Iraqi official sources stated that ExxonMobil contacted the Iraqi Ministry of Oil to express its interest in purchasing the majority stake owned by the Russian company Lukoil in the giant West Qurna 2 oil field.

In November 2025, some Arab countries marked a significant shift in regional investment trends amid increasing competition for strategic assets in the oil sector. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE ranked in the top three positions, confirming the desire of oil companies to expand their operations, either by developing discovered fields or acquiring additional capacities to increase production.

November witnessed clear increases in the pace of acquisitions, as global companies sought to enhance their operational presence in the Middle East, benefiting from the relative market stability. This underscores the rising value of deals compared to previous months, despite geopolitical uncertainties.
