The Libyan News Agency produced a documentary video, published by Sputnik Agency, as part of the cooperation agreement between the international news agency and Sputnik Radio, and the Libyan News Agency ‘LANA’. The white stork flocks migrate thousands of kilometers in search of abundant food and warmth. The distances they cover vary according to weather conditions and migration routes, ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 kilometers.
The white stork distinguishes itself from other migratory birds, which migrate in coordinated, organized groups, as it migrates in massive, irregular flocks reaching hundreds of thousands. Warm air currents help storks to soar and cover long distances with minimal effort. They avoid crossing the Mediterranean Sea during their migration from their breeding grounds in Europe to Africa in the fall, choosing to migrate via the Strait of Gibraltar in the west or the Bosphorus Strait in the east.
The white stork holds numerous nicknames; it is called ‘Al-Anz’ in Libya and Egypt due to its size, ‘Haj Qasim’ in Tunisia for accompanying pilgrim caravans, ‘Larg’ in Algeria and Morocco, and ‘Abu Saad’ in the Levant.
