Abbas Urges Recognition of Palestine Amid Diplomatic Movements

During a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Abbas emphasized that “this courageous stance comes at a significant historical moment to save the internationally supported two-state solution,” according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Abbas called on “countries that have not recognized the State of Palestine to do so, to give hope for a genuine international will to end the occupation and achieve peace based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, realizing an independent State of Palestine along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to live in security and peace with its neighbors. We should move towards reconstruction.”

The Palestinian President reiterated the “priority of the State of Palestine in ceasing fire, delivering aid, stopping starvation, lifting the siege, releasing prisoners and hostages, preventing displacement, and enabling the State of Palestine to fully assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, with Israel’s complete withdrawal.”

Carney stated during a press conference, “Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 2025.” He added, “The decision to recognize the State of Palestine was independent of the United States, and the actions of other countries were important,” noting that “Canada makes foreign policy decisions independently and when we see an opportunity and potential to influence. The two-state solution has been declining recently.”

This stance comes at a time when the Palestinian issue is witnessing varying European diplomatic movements, with France preceding Spain, Ireland, and Norway in announcing the recognition of the State of Palestine. Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he decided before the United Nations General Assembly in September. Macron stated in a post on his “X” platform account: “In fulfillment of its historical commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, France has decided to recognize the State of Palestine.”
